Coasters is a band that hails from sunny Cape Town, South Africa. What started as a musical collaboration between Katarina Staines and Luke Verrezen, grew into a deep friendship and musical partnership in which they channel their ideas and feelings in song form. Luke is an experienced musician who started playing multiple instruments at a young age, and is heavily involved in the music scene in South Africa having studied Jazz at UCT and is a regular session musician, playing with groups such as Nic Preen and Hartleyvale. Katarina is a multidisciplinary artist with a knack for songwriting and lyrics, bringing past and present experiences to life alongside Luke in what is now known as Coasters. Coasters recently played their first show at The Commons in Muizenberg, and have just released their debut EP – Heartbreak Looks Good On You – to a warm and welcoming local scene. Coasters have plans to release another EP and to actively enter the gig circuit in South Africa.
Guided by heartfelt lyrics, seamless chords and captivating synths, Coasters are a harmonious blend of sounds – indie and electro pop with a dash of psych rock – that transcends you through a wave of emotions. And while their music resonates with themes of love and grief, the pure and mesmerising vocals of Kata Staines, enhanced by Luke Verezen’s soothing and mood-enhancing instrumentals can break your heart and sew it back together.
Born in Cape Town, South Africa, their debut EP ‘Heartbreak Looks Good on You’ exudes a distinctive and innovative sound that effortlessly stands out in an oversaturated industry. Like finding a needle in a haystack, they bring a breath of fresh air.
