Call for Applications: Live Music Lab 2026

Live Music Lab 2026 is a fully funded, three-month training and work-based learning programme for young creatives in Johannesburg who want to build practical careers in live music. Delivered by Bassline, in partnership with the National Arts Council (NAC) and the Music in Africa Foundation’s NEFCISA programme, the Lab offers hands-on experience, professional mentorship and real industry exposure.

Now in its third year, Live Music Lab has become a key entry point into the live music ecosystem—focusing on the skills, people, and systems that make concerts, festivals, and artist careers possible.

What the programme offers:

Ten participants will be selected for an intensive learning journey that combines classroom training with paid, real-world production experience across some of Johannesburg’s most important live music platforms.

Programme structure

  • Classroom training: 60 hours (2–30 March 2026)

  • Practical work: 30 March – June 2026

  • Total duration: 3 months

  • Cost: Fully funded

Live industry experience includes:

Participants will work alongside professionals on:

  • Rhythmic Clash Series (April)

  • Bassline Artist Management (April–June)

  • Africa Rising Music Conference (May)

  • Bassline Fest (May)

  • Fête de la Musique (June)

By the end of the programme, participants will have hands-on credits, professional references, and a strong understanding of how the live music industry operates.

Who should apply:

This opportunity is open to unemployed youth based in Johannesburg who are interested in careers such as:

  • Concert promotion

  • Artist management

  • Technical production

  • Stage & backstage management

  • Artist wellness

  • Live music marketing and coordination

Minimum requirements:

  • Aged 18–25

  • Johannesburg resident

  • Unemployed

  • Matric certificate required

  • Strong interest in the music and creative industries

  • Team-oriented and solution-driven

Selection will prioritise gender equity, with a target of 70% female participation.

What you’ll learn:

Participants will receive:

  • An overview of the South African live music ecosystem

  • Exposure to multiple music industry career paths

  • Training aligned to individual strengths and interests

  • Mentorship from experienced industry professionals

  • On-the-job learning during major live events

Application timeline:

  • Applications open: 15 January 2026

  • Applications close: 15 February 2026 (or first 100 applications)

  • Successful applicants notified: 19 February 2026

  2. Prepare a 350-word written motivation

  3. Record a 2-minute video pitch (cellphone video is acceptable)

  4. Submit your application online with:
